Culture & Geography
At Herndon Montessori School, we believe that fostering a love for culture and geography is essential for nurturing global citizens. Our approach is rooted in the Montessori philosophy, which emphasizes hands-on learning and respect for individual interests.
Through hands-on activities, we want to foster a sense of global awareness and cultural appreciation among our preschoolers. We let our children explore continents, countries and different cultures using maps, puzzle maps and tactile materials. As part of this curriculum, children first experience general rules of the universe, such as, the division of land and water, and gradually break them down into smaller parts, continents, oceans, countries, etc.
We celebrate diversity by introducing children to a variety of cultures through storytelling, music, art, and traditional practices from around the world. Each month, we explore a different culture, allowing children to experience its unique customs, languages, and celebrations. We also talk about major festivals of different cultures, throughout the year. This immersive experience helps children develop empathy and respect for others, enriching their understanding of the world.
