Montessori Primary Program

Tender care - joyful play - bright future

Primary (3 - 6 Years)

Tangible academic experiences and practical life exercises engage children in learning, in a mixed-age classroom. Our Montessori Primary program offers a unique, mixed-age classroom environment, for children approximately 3 to 6 years old. Here, children engage in individual learning experiences, as well as one-on-one interactions, which are integral to the Montessori Method.

Montessori Classes for 3–6-Year-Old Children:

As children get older, they tend to see things that adults find ordinary, very interesting and special. Practical life exercises like sorting, pouring, or washing dishes absorb them completely. We recognize this as the beginning of control and coordination of mind and body. That’s why Montessori learning revolves around tangible, hands-on experiences.

Primary Program Environment and Experience at HMS

Our Primary/Preschool age group children use concrete materials to learn math; movable alphabet letters to explore language; and cubes, cylinders and other objects to categorize, find spatial relationships, and more. Practical learning experiences explore key subjects including:

  • Science and Nature
  • Music and Movement
  • Sensorial Skills
  • Cooking and Nutrition
  • Cultural Awareness
  • History and Geography
  • Language Arts
  • Mathematics

In the process, children are discovering independence, confidence, and innovation.

Prepared for Independence

Our Child-Centered, Montessori preschool primary classrooms are designed to support independent, self-directed learning where children freely choose activities that match their interests and developmental stage. These classrooms are designed to meet the ever-changing needs of the three- to six-year-old child. Beauty and order play important roles in creating the child size atmosphere which is carefully designed to encourage curiosity and a love for learning.

Herndon Montessori Primary Program offers each child the opportunity:

  • To develop a solid academic foundation and desire for lifelong learning
  • To encourage independent decision making and problem-solving skills
  • To become an integral member of the classroom community
  • To develop positive social, emotional and physical growth in a respectful environment

A typical day for a young student includes time when the class gathers in a circle to sing together and learns about something new; perhaps the topic is Olympics, or Oceans or how to greet a friend with a handshake.

Our below Primary environment offerings and benefits reflect the comprehensive, child-centered nature of the Montessori primary program, designed to support intellectual, social, and emotional growth.

Mixed-Age Learning:

Our 3-6 years multi-age classroom fosters collaboration and mentorship, as younger children learn from older peers and older children reinforce their knowledge by guiding others.

Hands-On Exploration:

Opportunity to learn to maneuver about their classroom with confidence.

Holistic Development:

Exploring concepts in arithmetic, reading and writing, geography, science and activities of daily life such as preparing their own snack or washing dishes.

Each school day includes active outside play time in our safe and child-friendly play areas.
